When Will I Need to Submit Residency Documents?
Most families will not need to submit residency documents.
However, Odyssey may request additional documentation if Iowa residency cannot be verified automatically during the application review process.
If documentation is requested, families may provide one of the approved residency verification options described below.
Option 1: Current Iowa Driver's License, State-Issued ID, or Permit
Families may submit a current Iowa:
- Driver's License
- State-Issued ID
- Instruction Permit
The address on the identification must match the address listed on the application.
Additional Requirements
- The identification must be current and valid.
- If the identification is under a spouse's name, a marriage license may also be required.
- Temporary licenses are acceptable as long as they are valid at the time the application is submitted and reviewed.
- Instruction permits are acceptable and may be used in the same manner as a driver's license for residency verification.
Limited-Term Licenses
Limited-term licenses cannot be used by themselves to establish residency.
If a limited-term license is submitted, additional documentation may be required to demonstrate the student's right to remain permanently or indefinitely in the United States.
Examples may include:
- Court records
- Employment authorization documents
- Passport entry stamps and Form I-94
- Other applicable immigration documentation
Option 2: Proof of Residence and Supporting Documentation
Families may provide one proof of residence document and one supporting residency document.
One Proof of Residence Document
Examples include:
- Current utility bill
- Current mortgage statement
- Current lease agreement
AND
One Supporting Residency Document
Choose one of the following:
- Iowa voter registration card
- Claim of homestead credit or military tax exemption on a home in Iowa
- Active checking or savings account with an Iowa address
- Other official documents or correspondence showing an Iowa address
Note: Bank account documentation must show both the account holder's name and Iowa address. Screenshots from an online banking portal may be accepted if the address is visible.
SNAP Documentation
Families receiving SNAP benefits may be able to use SNAP documentation as part of residency verification.
To use SNAP documentation, families must provide:
- A SNAP card showing the applicant's name
- Documentation from Iowa Health and Human Services showing the SNAP eligibility period
The eligibility period must overlap with the applicable residency review period.
Additional documentation may be requested during review.
Option 3: Written Residency Narrative
If you cannot provide the documents listed in Options 1 or 2, you may submit:
- A written and signed statement from the parent or guardian explaining your residency situation
- A statement confirming that you are an Iowa resident
- Supporting documentation demonstrating Iowa residency
Examples may include unique housing arrangements, living with relatives, or other situations where traditional residency documents are unavailable.
These submissions are reviewed individually and may require additional documentation.
Important: Addresses Must Match
Whenever possible, the address shown on your residency documents should match the address listed on your application.
If the addresses do not match, additional review may be required and Odyssey may request further documentation.
What Happens Next?
Once your documents are uploaded:
- Odyssey reviews the documentation to determine whether Iowa residency requirements have been met.
- Additional documents may be requested if more information is needed.
- If residency is successfully verified, the application review process will continue.
- If eligibility cannot be determined from the documents provided, additional review may be required.
