What Are the Age Requirements for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) Program?

Learn the age requirements for Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), including Pre-K and K–12 eligibility for the 2026–2027 school year.

What Are the Age Requirements for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) Program?

To qualify for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) Program, students must meet the age requirements for attending a Texas public school, charter school, or prekindergarten program.

Eligibility is determined by the student's age as of September 1, 2026.

Age Requirements by Grade Level

Grade Level

Age Requirement

Prekindergarten (Pre-K)

Must be between 3 and 5 years old by September 1, 2026.

Kindergarten–12th Grade (K–12)

Must be between 5 and 25 years old by September 1, 2026.

How Is My Child's Age Determined?

Your child's age is determined based on how old they are on September 1, 2026, rather than their age when you submit an application.

For example, if your child turns 3 on or before September 1, 2026, they meet the minimum age requirement for Pre-K.

⚠️Important: Meeting the age requirement does not automatically guarantee eligibility or participation in the TEFA Program. Students must also meet all other applicable program requirements.
