Does Past Public School Enrollment Count for Georgia Promise Scholarship Eligibility?

The purpose of this article is to inform and clarify the eligibility requirements for the Georgia Promise Scholarship, specifically addressing questions related to past public school enrollment.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Georgia Promise Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria as mandated by Senate Bill 233:

  1. Enrollment in Public School

    • The student must have been enrolled in a Georgia public school for two consecutive FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) counts. This means the student must have been enrolled for the two full most recent semesters.

  2. No Exceptions to the Rule

    • The Georgia Education Savings Authority does not have the authority to grant exceptions to this requirement, regardless of individual circumstances. This includes situations related to prior public school attendance, private school enrollment, or unique family circumstances.

Clarification on Common Scenarios

  • Students Currently Attending Private School
Students who are currently enrolled in a private school and have not been included in two most recent consecutive FTE counts in a public school are not eligible for the Georgia Promise Scholarship.

  • Past Public School Attendance
If a student previously attended a public school but did not meet the two-consecutive-semester requirement, they are ineligible for the scholarship.

  • COVID-19-Related Concerns
While the COVID-19 pandemic created unique educational challenges, the Georgia Education Savings Authority is not authorized to make exceptions to the FTE count requirement for students impacted by the pandemic.
