Next Steps for Texas Schools After a Family Applies for TEFA

This article helps participating Texas schools understand what happens after a family applies for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) Program.

TEFA applications open on February 4. After completing the application, families can select the school their student plans to attend.

As the program continues, schools will be able to confirm student enrollments and set tuition amounts in Odyssey for students who select their school.

Confirming a student’s enrollment in Odyssey does not replace the school’s existing admissions or enrollment process. It records which school the student may send tuition payments to through Odyssey.

Families can change the private school their student plans to attend at any time. Schools can also view the application status of students who have selected their school.

Understanding Student Application Statuses

  • Eligible: The student preliminarily meets all TEFA eligibility criteria. An Eligible status does not guarantee that the student will receive funding. Funding depends on the student’s priority and the amount of state funding available. Before the marketplace opens, students who will receive funding will move to an Approved status.

  • Under Review: The student’s application requires additional verification by the Odyssey team before an eligibility decision can be made.

  • Ineligible: The student does not meet the criteria to participate in the program.

  • Approved: The student meets all program criteria and can receive funding for the program year. This status is not likely to appear until later in the year before the marketplace opens in the summer.
